Question

Deena has just finished performing an imaging examination that included injecting the patient with a contrast agent. Because of potential risk of harm associated with the contrast injection, Deena had obtained written consent for the procedure as required. Just before dismissing the patient, Deena re-read the examination referral and realised that the examination should have been performed without the contrast agent. The examination now needs to be re-done on a different day.

Deena realises the patient will be angry at hearing that a mistake was made, so she decides to tell him instead that there was an equipment problem and that he will need to rebook his examination but next time he won't need an injection.

1. Evaluate Deena's reesponse in terms of clinical ethics.

2. Outline how Deena could use the elements of open disclosure to inform the patient about the situation.
