Workshop: Finding Sources

Overview: When college students need to do research, some will automatically turn to the internet. While the internet does have some good information available, it also has a lot of poorly researched materials, opinion without fact, or selective postings that don't tell the whole story. As a result, it's important to be cautious when doing research for any college-level assignment, or for a business that may make decisions based on the information gathered.

Quality research is credible and relevant. Credible means it comes from a reliable source, has expert opinion, and is truthful and ethical. In some cases the research has been "peer reviewed" (read by other experts in the field who scrutinize the information to make sure it is correct). Relevant means that it is directly linked to your topic or purpose; it contains information that is significant and up-to-date.

The Library Resource Centre (LRC) gives students access to dozens of quality research databases that are not available to the average internet user. This workshop asks you to use the LRC databases to find three sources of information that support the topic and purpose of your research report. For each source you find you'll be asked to show why you think it is credible and relevant. You'll also be asked to write out the in-text citation and the reference according to APA@Conestoga.
