Consider a refrigerator or heat pump, as in Figure 13.7, for which the fluid temperatures just before entering stages 1, 2, 3, 4 are given by 40 °C, 20 °C, -10 °C, 5°C, respectively. The operating fluid is a gas with five degrees of freedom per molecule.

For each mole of fluid that passes through the cycle, find

(a) the work done on the gas by the compressor,

(b) the heat energy released by the gas into the hot reservoir,

(c) the energy lost to work in the expansion chamber,

(d) the heat absorbed in the cold coils,

(e) the coefficient of performance for this refrigerator.
