A parallel-plate capacitor has a plate separation of 1.74 centimeter and a plate area of 25 cm2. The capacitor is immersed in an insulating liquid with a dielectric constant of 29.90; the dielectric strength of the liquid is large enough that the possibility of dielectric breakdown can be neglected. While immersed in the liquid, the plates are charged to a voltage of 9.030 Volt and disconnected from the source. The plates are then slowly lifted out of the liquid therefore that air is the only substance between the plates.
(a) Find the charge on the plates before and after the lift out of liquid.
(c) Find the capacitance while immersed.
(d) Find the voltage between the plates after the lift is complete.
(e) Find the electrostatic potential energy of the charged capacitor while it is immersed?
(f) Find the electrostatic potential energy of the charged capacitor after the lift?
(g) Neglecting the weight of the capacitor, determine how much work would have been required to lift the charged plates out of the liquid? In other words, only consider the work done against electric forces, neglecting the work done against gravitational forces.
