A strip of material 1 inch wide, w, and initially 1/16 in. thick is compressed between flat dies to one half its original height. The die depth, b, is 1/4 inch. Model the material by s = 17+18*epsilon (ksi). Find the stress and the strain in all three dimensions when compressed. Then, find the force on the die, according to the maximum shear stress criterion and according to the distortion energy criterion. Finally, explain the difference between these two results. What was this material?
