In a typical human cell, replication of the entire genome takes about a day.

(a) A complex of mammalian DNA polymerase and the other enzymes necessary for replication can copy ~ 50 bases per second. Is there a contradiction? Explain!

(b) A typical tumor doubles in size only every 100 days (although this varies significantly depending on the type of tumor). Can you speculate on why this is so much slower than the rate at which the genome can replicate?
