A piston/cylinder device initially contains 0.1 cu. m. of air at 27 C. A very light piston that moves without friction is connected to a spring that is initially at its equilibrium position (no force). The spring constant is 100 kN/m and the area of the piston is 0.2 sq. m. The gas is heated to a temperature of 200C, expanding the gas and compressing the spring. The spring is linear, so the spring force is F = k*x.

Find:

a) The mass of the gas

b) Draw a free-body diagram of the piston

c) The equilibrium position, x, of the piston after the gas is heated

d) The work done on the spring

e) The heat transferred into the gas
