Air at 25°C flows at 30 × 10-6 kg/s within 100-mmlong channels used to cool a high thermal conductivity metal mold. Assume the flow is hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed.
(a) Determine the heat transferred to the air for a circular channel (D 10 mm) when the mold temperature is 50°C (case A).
(b) Using new manufacturing methods (see Problem 8.105), channels of complex cross section can be readily fabricated within metal objects, such as molds. Consider air flowing under the same conditions as in case A, except now the channel is segmented into six smaller triangular sections. The flow area of case A is equal to the total flow area of case B. Determine the heat transferred to the air for the segmented channel.
(c) Compare the pressure drops for cases A and B.
The piston is then moved in, and heat is rejected by the air reversibly at constant pressure until the volume is the same as it was initially. Calculate the net heat flow and the overall change of entropy. Sketch the process on a T-s diagram.
When the gear rotates 20 revolutions, it achieves an angular velocity of v = 30 rad>s, starting from rest. Determine its constant angular acceleration and the time required.
A deep freezer for hazardous chemicals is to be maintained at -20oF to insure a safe environment for the chemicals. The freezer is in a room that is kept at 60oF, and the inner and outer walls of the freezer are made of 26-gauge (0.0184-in) steel.
Write a 3-4 page paper describing what a "Natural Monopoly" is and whether you think the government should treat telephone, cable or broadcasting companies as "Natural Monopolies." Include citations.
A power plant generates steam from coal burning which burns at 3,000oF and produces about 13,000 BTU per pound. The steam is put into a poorly insulated turbine which allows 2,000 BTU per pound of coal to escape to the atmosphere at 90oF.
Two clean and parallel glass plates, separated by a gap of 1.625 mm, are dipped in water. If σ = 0.0735 N/m, determine how high the water will rise.
(a) What are the gas and water outlet temperatures? (b) Assuming fully developed flow, what is the tube- side convection coefficient? (c) With all other conditions remaining the same, pl
