A vertical-axis capstan drum 60 cm in diameter was used to pull inthe anchor chain of a whaler a century ago. Six horizontal arms 1.2m long protruded from the top of the drum, and a man on each armexerted a force of 300 N on it. The efficiency of the system was85%.
