Q. In a certain part of the North America Nebula, the amount of interstellar extinction in the visual wavelength band is 1.1 magnitudes. The thickness of the nebula is estimated to be 20 pc and it is located 700 pc from Earth. Suppose that a B spectral class main-sequence star is observed in the direction of the nebula and that the absolute visual magnitude of the star is known to be M(V)=-1.1 from spectroscopic data. Neglect any other sources of extinction between the observer and the nebula. Show all your work, assumptions, equations, and units.
1.Find the apparent visual magnitude of the star if it is lying just in front of the nebula.
2.Find the apparent visual magnitude of the star if it is lying just behind the nebula.
3.Without taking the existence of the nebula into consideration, based on its apparent magnitude, how far away does the star in part (b) appear to be? What would the percentage error be in determining the distance if interstellar extinction were neglected?
A ball is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 1.63m/s from a point 4.21m above the ground. What is the time at which it will reach the ground.
Find (a) magnitude and (b) direction of A - B. (Give the direction as a positive angle with respect to due east). Find out the (c) magnitude and (d) direction of B - A. (Give the direction as a positive angle with respect to due west).
Landing on the Moon, a spacecraft fires its retrorockets and comes to a complete stop just 19m above the lunar surface. It then drops freely to surface. How long does it take to fall in seconds? What is its impact speed in meter per seconds.
A conveyor belt at a quarry lifts 2,000 kg of sand per minute up a vertical distance of 12 meters. The sand is originally at rest, then moves at a speed of 0.20 m/s all along the conveyor belt. What is the instantaneous power produced by this machine..

You travel to an alien planet. The local population tries very hard to tell you what gravity is on the surface. You cannot understand them, and do not have a tool to calculate gravity directly. You also ran out of water. They offer a liquid to you, o..
A particular nucleus of the element plutonium contains 94 protons and 150 neutrons. What is the magnitude of the force from the nucleus on a single electron that is at a distance of 0.563 × 10-12 m from the plutonium nucleus.
A sailboat is travelling east at 4.0 m/s. A sudden gust of wind gives the boat an acceleration a = (1.35 m/s2 30° north of east). What is the boat's speed 6.0 seconds later while the gust subsides.
A rope of negligible mass is wrapped around a 225 kg solid cylinder of radius 0.40 m. The cylinder is suspended some meters off the ground with its axis oriented horizontally, and turns on that axis without friction.
