Assignment:
Scenario 1
I work as an Assistant Project Manager and my current project is a huge addition to a local high school. The additions features a podcast studio, new classrooms, and a huge new state-of-the-art athletic wing with amazing views. Its a stunning design for the community and students. Construction doesn't start with concrete, it starts with design. An architect consults with the client to understand their needs and desires of the project. The architect needs a deep understanding of huminites from the start to functional, beautiful, and strong design. Construction Project Managers interpret this design, consult with the client and architect, and work with sub contractors to bring the drawings to life. Project Managers benefit from humanities for many reasons, including the ability to understand drawings not from just a conception but from an emotional stand point. Projects like this are built with both technical precision and human passion enabling students to thrive and be the best they can.
Scenario 2
As a receptionist at a skilled nursing facility, deepening my understanding of the humanities has also helped deepen my empathy, expand my communication, critical thinking skills, and cultural competence. I have found that working with people (coworkers, patients, and their families) from varying age groups, racial, and cultural backgrounds has helped me navigate different situations especially high conflict ones using a combination of empathy, active listening, and finding quick solutions to whatever problem is being brought to my attention.
As a future business owner, the humanities will prove to have a positive influence in similar ways as my current career when it comes to communication, critical thinking, cultural competence, navigating ethical and high conflict situations, and empathy. The humanities paired with a psychology degree also helps with understanding my target populations consumer needs based on aspects of human behavior, and fostering my resilience. Certain fields that utilize and incorporate core components of literature, languages, history, and philosophy (i.e. psychology, business & marketing, law, and education) do benefit the most from the humanities. But even so, I would say that the humanities overall do pose a wide range of universal benefits such as the ones mentioned above.
Based on scenarios 1 & 2 please answer the following who find the humanities beneficial in a different way than you do. Explain whether these benefits are universal or specific to a certain kind of field. Could the benefits your peers found aid you in your current or future job? Why or why not?
