I.Introduction

A. Statistics from The U.S. Department of Education reveal that in the school year 2011-2012, Out of 49 million students enrolled in public school, 3.5 million students were suspended in-school, 3.45 million were suspended out of school while, 130, 000 students were expelled. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reveal that Last year, 3,328,750 Students were suspended while 102,080 were expelled.

B. Some students are expelled because of several minor offences while others for serious crimes. Irrespective of the offence that led to expulsion, most students often have a choice to enroll in alternative schools or homeschool.

Combining students that had severe criminal issues with those that had several minor mistakes is not healthy in terms of behavior development. Students who opt for homeschooling may not have enough resources as they would have had in school. Expulsion or multiple suspensions also negatively affect students GPA.Apparently, suspending students or expelling students from school does more harm than good.

C. Today we are going to look at why expulsion from school as a form of punishment is legally wrong.

1. Providing Education is a Legal Responsibility of the Government but Expulsion takes away this right.

2. Increased Risk to future Criminal and anti-social behavior, or drugs and substance abuse.

3. Expulsions as an Ethical Question to Vulnerable ("at risk") Students with disabilities and Mental health problems.

II.Main Point 1: Providing Education is a Legal Responsibility of the Government but Expulsion takes away this right.

A. Increased Drop Out rates

B. Low Grades due to alternate learning systems.

III.Main Point 2: Increased Risk to future Criminal and anti-social behavior, or drugs and substance abuse.

A. Expulsion sends back the student to the surrounding that led to behavior Problems thus student is not disciplined or corrected.

B. Future Criminal Activities

1. Drug Indulgence due to Negative Peer Influences.

2. Gang Activity.

3. Drug peddling and abuse.

IV.Main Point 3: Expulsion as an Ethical Question to Vulnerable ("at risk") Students with disabilities and Mental health problems.

A. Expulsions have caused negative attitudes toward disability and mental health in schools.

V.Conclusion

A. We have seen that expulsion from school is legally unlawful because:

1. Providing Education is a Legal Responsibility of the Government but Expulsion takes away this right

2. Expulsion Increases Risk to future Criminal and anti-social behavior, or drugs and substance abuse.

3. Expulsionis an Ethical Question to Vulnerable ("at risk") Students with disabilities and Mental health problems

B. Other correctional options that focus on improving a student's behavior should be encouraged.
