Over the years, peer counseling programs have grown and expanded to include such issues as suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, and depression. It is not unusual to find peer helpers or facilitators in high school counseling centers as well as universities and in community mental health programs. In career counseling programs, peer counselors are used in a variety of helping positions such as discussion leaders, career information facilitators, and in outreach programs. The implications of a well-informed peer helper suggests to clients that they are well trained for their helping roles and are regularly supervised. Peer counselors who are well trained also are aware of their limitations as a helper and therefore have explicit instructions on how and where to refer students who may express personal concerns that require professional help.
