Maritime delimitation is the process of fixing a maritime boundary. A boundary is a conceptual division of the maritime zones which dictates where a state can exercise jurisdiction or its sovereignty. In other words, it tells where one country's jurisdiction starts and where another ends. A demarcation line tells where a country can exercise exclusive or sovereign rights. Maritime delimitation is one of the most extensively researched fields in international law. The understanding of the delimitation process lies at the intersection of legal and spatial analysis. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered its historic ruling in The Kenya v Somalia concerning the dispute of "Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean" on October, 12, 2021.
