INSTRUCTIONS
In this assignment, you will work in a group to develop a research question and a research proposal to explore that idea.
There should be a variety of research topics between the groups in your class. Please do not choose the same topic as other groups in your class. There are some topics that are NOT allowed. Please see the list at the end of these instructions.
ONLY ONE member (the same member) of your team should submit this assessment either as a draft or in final format to Turnitin. If more than one person submits a version to Turnitin, then this will affect the Turnitin Similarity report. No AI shortcuts - Just Genuine Assignment Help from Real Tutors.
Copilot
You will be using Copilot at the beginning of this assessment to assist with writing this proposal. After you have finalised your research question, please use the following exact prompt:
‘Write a research proposal on the research question [enter your research question].
Copilot will generate a simple proposal that will include objectives, design, sampling, recruitment, data collection, data analysis, ethics, and rigour.
You will then critique and expand on what Copilot has suggested. A template is provided in Bb for you to follow. PLEASE NOTE: You cannot use Copilot or other GenAI to write the remainder of the assessment.
For example, you cannot use Copilot or other Gen-AI in the creation or critical analysis of content, including:
Writing any part of your assignment without Unit Coordinator approval or source attribution.
Paraphrasing or rewriting any part of your assignment.
Putting unit content (e.g., slides, unit outlines, speech-to-text) into text-based Gen-AI to create summaries.
Translating written assessments from another language into English. Your English language proficiency is being tested, and the tools are often imperfect.
More information on the appropriate use of GenAI is provided at the end of this document and on Blackboard.
Part A - Group written submission
2250-word written submission. (+/- 10% = up to 2475 words)
The content from Copilot should take up about 200 to 225 words.
Use the template provided on Bb.
Allocate sections to each person in your group.
Study title & background to the problem
Study objectives, significance and design
Sampling & recruitment
Data collection & data analysis
Ethical considerations & Rigour (Reliability & Validity / Trustworthiness)
Each of these sections should be approximately 350 - 400 words. If one section requires more words, it is possible to ‘use' words from another section. The total for these sections should be 2000 words.
In-text references and headings are included in the word count.
This will need to be submitted as a Word document through TURNITIN
A cover page is required - list all group members' names and student ID numbers, and the title of the proposal
You will be asked to make a declaration about the use of Generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT). Note you should not use any other form of Generative AI (other than Copilot as described above) in this assessment.
A contents page is not required.
A minimum of 8 references is required for a ‘satisfactory' mark for referencing. APA 7th should be used.
All members of the group will receive the same mark for the written submission. Hence, it is important to ensure that all group members contribute and that all group members are satisfied with the completed piece of work before submission.
?
Part B - Peer assessment
You will provide a peer assessment mark for your own contribution and the contribution of each of your group members. Your peer assessment score will be the average of the scores awarded to you by your group members. Please use the peer review rubric that has been given.
Peer assessment will focus on the following areas of your contribution:
Quantity of work
Quality of work
Communication skills
Dependability
Disallowed topics
The effectiveness of a patient/family education program on outcomes related to diabetes mellitus.
The levels of stress experienced by university students.
These topics are disallowed because they have either been studied extensively already or have been used frequently by students in previous years.
After generating the skeleton proposal using Copilot you must use your own research to expand and build on each section.
In this unit, students may use Copilot to support their learning and assessment.
See the assessment instructions for more information. Please only use Copilot as directed in the instructions.
This Unit allows for the following GenAI platforms to be used:
Microsoft Copilot (Curtin version only) - as described above
Microsoft Teams (Curtin version only)
Grammarly (Curtin version of Grammarly is approved for staff and student use).
If you do use GenAI beyond what is described in the instructions, you must document your use of GenAI (what tools, how it was used) and verify the accuracy of the outputs they use.
All students who use GenAI must also include a declaration of use of which tool and how it has been used in the reference list.
It is important to note that any references included in your essay must come from original, credible sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, books, or reputable academic websites). AI-generated references are not acceptable. Ensure that all citations and references are verified as accurate and traceable to their original sources.
You may like to choose from one of the scenarios below to develop your research idea:
OPTION 1 - Understanding Patient or Family Experiences of Illness and Health Care
During your clinical placements, you may have noticed that patients or families respond very differently to illness, treatment, or hospitalisation. You are interested in exploring i) how patients experience living with a specific condition or ii) how families experience caring for someone with that condition. Your proposal could aim to understand how these experiences influence, for example, engagement with care, treatment adherence or emotional wellbeing, or coping. A sample research proposal could include a) experiences of parents caring for a child with a chronic condition or b) patient experiences of living with long-term pain.
OPTION 2- Improving Care Through an Intervention
In your placements, you have observed a common clinical issue where current practice is not achieving the best outcome. You have an idea for an intervention, such as i) a patient or staff education program, ii) a new communication or handover approach, iii) an interdisciplinary or team-based approach. Your proposal could explore the effectiveness of your intervention. A sample research proposal could include a) does a nurse-led discharge planning program reduce readmission to hospitals for patients with a specific condition (e.g., asthma), b) does a team-based approach improve continuity of care for patients with chronic specific conditions.
OPTION 3- Supporting Adolescents in Today's World
You are interested in adolescent health and wellbeing and recognise that social, digital, and environmental challenges have significantly influenced people's lives. Your research may explore i) Adolescent coping strategies, ii) mental health support, and the effectiveness of programs designed to support adolescents in community or health care settings. A sample research proposal could include a) coping strategies used by adolescents experiencing anxiety or b) the effectiveness of peer-support programs for adolescents.
OPTION 4- The Nursing-Midwife Student Learning Experience
As a nurse or midwife student, you are well placed to explore how students experience learning in the nursing-midwifery program. Your research may i) evaluate a new teaching or learning activity or ii) explore students' lived experience of learning, assessment, or clinical placement. A sample research proposal could include a) student experiences of simulation-based learning, or b) how nurses experience the transition from university-based training to clinical placement of practice.
OPTION 5- Nurses or Midwives Work and Wellbeing
Nursing and Midwifery are emotionally and professionally demanding. You are interested in exploring Registered Nurses or Midwives' experiences at work, such as i) experiences caring for acutely unwell patients, or ii) workplace support, leadership, or teamwork. A sample research proposal could include a) how nurses experience caring for patients who are clinically deteriorating in hospital, or b) what factors influence nurses' wellbeing in acute care environments.
OPTION 6
You may have a unique idea of your own that you would like to explore further. Remember, your research must be: i) relevant to nursing or midwifery practice, ii) feasible, and iii) justified using existing literature.
