Learning Goals for the Session I. Explore Client's Emotional Affect: One of the main goals of the session is to learn how to assess the client's emotional affect. As the intern, I must learn how to ask questions that help the client express her feelings and experiences because the client has said she is moderately distressed and has been through trauma. For example, I ask open-ended questions like, "Can you tell me more about how you feel when you think about your past experiences?" Use Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: Another important learning goal is to watch and use cognitive-behavioral techniques that will help the client deal with her PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms. As an intern, I can focus on developing skills to introduce concepts such as cognitive restructuring. For example, the clinician might tell the client to find and question negative thoughts about her safety and self-worth that came up after she was hurt. The intern can help the client change these thoughts into more realistic and empowering beliefs that will help her get better and better at dealing with her problems.
