Question
Siew Eng is an undergraduate who became depressed following the death of her father. She was referred by her doctor to an exploratory psychodynamic group at the university. In the group, she talked about her special relationship with her father and how she was estranged from her siblings because they were jealous of her. In the working phase of the group, it became very noticeable that Siew Eng had become very attached to the male therapist. She would sit next to him in every session and look at him whenever any difficulty arose in the group. When she shared her problems, she seemed to expect the therapist to give her solutions and dismiss the responses of the other group members. She is always the last to leave the room after each session and would try to ask the therapist some questions in private.
The group tried to engage Siew Eng initially but subsequently ignored her and appeared not to notice her behaviour toward the therapist. The exception was Mark who was noted to roll his eyes and, at times, move uneasily in his chair whenever Siew Eng tries to get more attention from the therapist. Mark had been the only child in his family until he was 10 years old when his sister was born. She has special needs, and the attention of Mark's parents has been caught up with her care since then. As such, he has become very independent and detached from his family. He was referred to the group because his psychiatrist was concerned that he was too socially isolated. He was usually quiet in the group and would only speak when questions were asked of him. He never asked for any help, advice or support from the therapist.
Discuss five interventions in response to Mark if this were a support group. For each intervention, do include the aim of the intervention, how you will execute this and the expected outcome/s of the intervention.
