Assignment Paper - Writing Diagnostic
Essay Assignment - This semester our course topic is focused on your career goals/professional aspirations. As a continued way to get to know you and your interests in your field, this assignment asks you to write a 3-5 page essay that tells a story of how you first became interested in your profession. The story told in the essay should center on one event in your past; it could be about an experience on the job, an experience with family or friends, or an experience at school, etc. It's up to you! However, the essay should not go over several events or sequences of events through your life (for example, the paper should not outline your entire journey throughout high school up to this point); instead, the essay should detail one experience that led to your career choice. It may take some reflection to think about an experience in your life that may have sparked your interest in your current career goal. If you do not have any career goals at the moment, consider an experience that led you to choose your declared major or an experience that inspired you to attend college.
The essay should include the following considerations:
- A thoughtful title that reflects the content of the essay (do not title your essay Writing Diagnostic).
- A clear introduction that explains how the experience led to your career goals.
- Details about the experience-consider the sights, sounds, smells, and other details about the event that could be used in the essay to bring the story to life for the reader.
- An understanding of the audience's needs; consider what readers will need to help them understand the essay's story and its significance to your career.
- A concluding paragraph that includes some discussion about your concerns about the field/career and your role in it (please note: the conclusion should not include the phrase "in conclusion").
- Multiple paragraphs over 3-5 pages-the essay should be organized thoughtfully and effectively for clarity.
- Correct formatting according to the class's formatting guidelines.
- Try to use as much detail as possible and make your writing as vivid as possible. Please be sure to proofread your draft before submitting it.
- The paper should be edited for grammar and writing pet peeves.
Writer's Memo - After you've completed the draft, hit your "Enter" once, type the heading "Writer's Memo," and then compose a short paragraph of 200+ words about your completion of the assignment (this paragraph and the next are approximately 210 words). The memo should describe your work for the essay and how you accomplished it. Some questions to consider: What process did you follow to complete the assignment? Was it difficult to accomplish? How long did the assignment take to complete? How many drafts were needed? What else would you like me to know about your composing process? Was this essay difficult to write? What made it difficult? Or, why was it easy for you? What are your concerns about the final draft? Your memo should focus on the process for writing the paper and not on the topic itself.
Topics to Consider:
- Think about some early memories you have about "what you wanted to be when you grew up." Have those ideas come to fruition?
- Think about influential people in your life; perhaps your interactions with them help put you on your current career path.
- Think about experiences in school or college (this essay does NOT have to focus on a childhood memory!). A teacher, coach, counselor, advisor, etc., may have influenced you in a way you weren't aware of then.
- Think about past volunteer experiences, hobbies, jobs, etc.
- Think about triumphs in your life that helped form your future; likewise, perhaps a struggle in your life helped you to decide on what you wanted in life.
Good writing typically includes the following:
- An ability to hook the reader from the first line and keep his/her attention until the last line.
- Effective use of detail and description.
- Clear and lively style.
- Vivid images and examples.
- A personal voice that conveys a sense of involvement.
- Thoughtful and insightful reflection.
- An attempt to be creative and unique.
- Paragraphs that flow from one to the next and build to a meaningful conclusion.
- Attention to proper grammar and mechanics.
Note that the career is to be a Registered Nurse.
