Question: Maria is an 18-year-old female who dropped out of high school to work part time at a local factory. She has a boyfriend called Lachlan, who is 27 years old. They have been together for about 18 months.

Maria started using ice when she met Lachlan and she is now on the verge of losing her job. She has tried to stop herself from using it too much, as she cannot afford to lose her job; however, Lachlan pressures her into using the drug every time that he uses, or when his friends come over for a session. Lately, Lachlan has become aggressive when he is on ice and Maria finds new bruises or cuts on herself the next day.

She wakes up in pain and cannot recall what happened. Lachlan just laughs it off and tells her to 'harden up'. Maria has also just found out she is pregnant. She reluctantly tells Lachlan, who does not react well and threatens to beat her up until she loses the baby.

Maria's GP identifies bruising around her shoulders, ribs and legs during a recent visit. Maria admits that Lachlan has been beating her up - particularly due to the pregnancy as she wants to keep the baby.

Maria expresses her distress and her fear of not only losing her baby, but what he might do to her if she left him. She knows he would come after her and try to hurt her. Maria wants to be able to support her baby by getting a job somewhere and is considering going back to school on the side if she can.

You are Maria's case worker.
As part of this role play you must have a discussion with Maria about the issues and challenges of her current situation. You will need to provide relevant and appropriate advice and a recommendation of suitable services.
