Mr. Johnson has emphysema, a disease in which the respiratory member is damaged and gas exchange in the lung is poor. Due to this condition, Mr. Johnson's CO2 levels are increased and his O2 levels are decreased. His pO2 is below 60 mmHg and his pulse oximeter is below 90% (Oxygen levels are below normal). Blood work has also shown his hematocrit to be above normal at 56%.

1. Explain why a patient with emphysema would end up with a hematocrit above normal.

2. What is the medical term used to describe a person with an elevated RBC count?
