An article in the Star and Tribune on March 24th stated that chicken breeding has resulted in great changes in the rate at which chickens grow and the size to which they grow - it now takes ~ 42 days to raise a 5 pound chicken, compared to ~ 60 days 30 years ago. Let's say you think this is great, and also think it would be a good idea to breed chickens that grow bigger even faster. You consider two strategies. One strategy is to impose selection for faster growth on chickens living in a facility where each chicken is given the same amount of food, the same amount of space, and lives in a controlled environment in which temperature and day length are regulated. The second strategy is to select for faster growth on chickens living in a pasture where they spend their days pecking around for food and have a hen house from which they are free to come and go.
Explain which strategy you think would lead to more rapid genetically-based gains in the rate at which chickens grow? (assume the starting populations for both strategies have the same genetic composition).
The wild type fruit fly, Drosophilia melanogaster, has straight wings and long bristles. Mutant strains have been isolated that have either curled wings or short bristles.
Use information collected from visual comparison or the colorimetric measurements, what were the initial velocities for the uncatalyzed reaction, and those catalyzed by the purified acid phosphatase, and the wheat germ extract.
The PCR-derived DNA fragment used an insert in pUC19 was amplified by thenty-five cycles. Suppose that the PCR amplification process and restriction digestion process are 100% efficient.
Haemophilus influenza requires hemin to synthesize cytochromes and NAD from other cells. For what does it use these two growth factors? What disease(s) does H. influenza cause?
In a population of desert bighorn sheep, a mutant recessive allele c has been discovered to cause curled coats in both males and females. The normal dominant allele C produces straight coats.
Think about the pathology of a cytokine storm, select possible strategies that would be likely to diminish the harmful effects of superantigen toxins.
Gene frequencies for the ABO alleles vary geographically. For example the I^A allele makes up nearly 50 percent of the genes for blood type among Australian Aborigines, about 25 percent in Central Asian populations,

Several main types of animals are now extinct. A treasure trove of fossils from these unusual animals was found in the Canadian Rockies.
Based on human logic, if a parasite kills its host it is also harming itself. Tapeworms then appear to be perfect parasites because they cause very few symptoms in the host.
A gerbil poplulation has one hundred light blue gerbiles, 250 dark blue gerbils, and 150 black gerbils. In one generation 10 percent of the home population is displaced by a gang of tough light blue gerbils.
