As a social work student, you have likely not had much experience navigating boundary issues in practice. Sometimes in a field placement, students may find themselves becoming overly involved in their clients' lives and increasingly dependent on their clients' success. This comes from a positive place-from a desire to help each client to the fullest. However, this level of involvement is ethically problematic, as there is little separation between practitioner and client. Another area in which students and even licensed professionals can have difficulty is self-disclosure. Self-disclosure-in other words, sharing a bit of yourself or your personal story-can be a powerful tool to connect with a client. But it must be done in an appropriate manner.
