Discussion Post: Mind Reading- The Double Standard Analysis
First listen to (and/or read the transcript) from the hiddenbrain.org podcast from 2021, called Mind Reading 2.0 - The Double Standard.
Task
I. The host, Shankar Vedantam, asks Princeton researcher Emily Pronin to explain the yardsticks we use to evaluate others' behavior versus own. In her answer she describes two different paths we use to make judgements. Briefly explain what these paths are and using specific examples of your own, explain how these two paths lead to different judgments of ourselves versus others.
II. The host and researcher talk about three different phenomena: naïve realism, the blind spot bias, and the introspection illusion. Pick the ONE you find most interesting and describe it briefly in your own words and why you chose it. Include an example (preferably from your own experience or from experiences you have seen or heard about) in your explanation.
III. Explain how one or more of these phenomena, or any of the cognitive biases in this week's module, might impact the type of work you want to do, such as product design, clinical work, healthcare systems, etc. Be specific; for example, you could explain how the bias blind spot can lead politicians to think that lobbyists, who raise money for them and/or treat them to expensive meals or trips, have no influence on their opinions or how they vote on policy issues.
