Problem

A group of students is establishing a school garden in a coastal region of Guyana. The following weed management plan is implemented: The land is cleared using glyphosate. Manure and lime are applied. After two, weeds re-emerge. Crops are planted immediately without further weed control. After planting, heavy weed infestation occurs, resulting in poor crop growth and reduced yields. (Clearly indicate the respective letter at the beginning of every response) In light of the information above:

1) Explain two weaknesses in the weed management approach used.

2) Discuss the stale seedbed technique and its relevance to weed control under local conditions.

3) Outline a step-by-step improved weed management programme suitable for a school garden in Guyana.

4) Recommend one suitable post-emergence herbicide for use during crop growth and justify your choice. Your justification should be based on relevant agronomic considerations.

5) Discuss the importance of timing in herbicide application and its impact on weed control and crop performance.
