Sharina is a 22 year old Aboriginal woman who is escorted into Accident and Emergency by a police officer. She is bent over as if in pain and swears at the police officer to stop pushing her. The triage nurse asks you to calm Sharina down as her swearing is distressing other patients. The police officer says she's faking illness.
You take her to an interview room while the officer waits outside. Sharina tells you that her 38 year old boyfriend Deon broke her ribs, which are hurting. She left to get away from his violence but he tracked her down.
Her Nan who raised her gave the police her new address so they could check up on her. Instead the police arrested and charged Sharina for fines for swearing at a police officer when he called her racist names. She is in prison for four days as she did not have the money to pay the fines.
When the doctor sees her, she declares her fit to return to prison. How would you use theory to explain the situation Sharina is in, and what theory or approach would you use to inform your practice?
