Problem
Mr Azuli, 58, male , who presents to the emergency department with burning upper abdominal pain and nausea. He is a manager of a local supermarket and works long hours. He enjoys red wine before he has his dinner . He has a sore back from a fall at work and needs to take Nurofen daily to assist with the pain. He admits to being a smoker just the take the edge of standing on his feet all day . His Dad always complained of heart burn, but nothing came of it .
He has an ECG and cardiac enzymes taken to rule out myocardial infarction. Both tests return a negative result, indicating the cause is not cardiac in origin. Vital signs are taken:
130/80 BP, 84 HR, 22 RR, 98% SpO2, temp 36.7
Mr Azuli is diagnosed with GORD. Before discharge he is given an antacid medication (Mylanta, Aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and simethicone ) with good effect. It is recommended he follows up with his GP to consider further treatment with a proton pump inhibitor
