In cattle, coats may be solid white, solid black, or white and black spotted. When true breeding solid whites are crossed to true-breeding solid blacks, the F1 generation consists of all spotted individuals. In the F2, the following ratio is observed: 1/4 solid white: 1/2 black and white spotted: 1/4 solid black. Explain the mode of inheritance governing coat color and pattern.
