Explain how The greek creation myth "Adonis" the character fulfills as many of the characteristics of the archetype as you can. • Associated with the cycle of plants/crops/seasons: birth, growth, death, and rebirth.
• The god dies and experiences some kind of rebirth, though the death doesn't have to be a literal one. It is often a journey to the underworld and then a return to the upperworld.
• Closely linked to the Mother Goddess, who is also associated with cycles of birth, death, and rebirth. The Dying-and-Rising god is often the child or lover of the Mother Goddess, who the Goddess helps to revive.
• Due to the fact that seeds that grow from the earth then fall back into the same earth and grow into something new, this process is sometimes metaphorically represented through an incestual relationship between the Earth Mother and the Dying-and-Rising child figure. The
• Dying-and-Rising god might also be castrated in the myth (scattering his seed onto the earth).
• Often killed as part of a sacrifice (to restore fertility, end a drought, appease an angry god) or as a scapegoat, dying in place of another.
• Provides hope for a (better) afterlife to his followers/believers.
