Assignment:
For each of the following passages, identify the fallacy that seems most prominent in the arguer's reasoning, and briefly explain how the fallacy shows up in the passage.
1. Have you seen those noisy protesters complaining about the testing of cosmetics on lab animals? They whine about how cruel the testing is, but do you notice how many of them wear expensive leather sandals, and how many of them eat meat? To me, they're a bunch of preachy, privileged hypocrites.
2. Though I don't think it is the job of educators to make students believe any particular view of how life developed on our planet, I think it's only right that students be made aware of the various theories that are out there. And, as Professor Critchlow from Harvard has recently argued, "the creationist position taught in religious schools is a scientific theory in just the same way as Darwin's theory of evolution is." As a distinguished professor of religious studies at a highly reputable institution, Professor Critchlow's words must be taken seriously. I therefore strongly believe that we should support the teaching of creationism alongside of evolutionism in all public high schools.
3. When we are introduced to new people, we naturally smile and greet them warmly. Since such forms of friendliness are so natural, it is a great mystery why there is so much cruelty and unkindness in the world, especially toward people we don't know well. How can human nature be so inconsistent? More research should be devoted to solving this puzzle.
