Case: A teacher wanted to encourage her students to raise their hands and participate more in class by asking more questions and offering more comments. After talking to them about why this is important, there were two different outcomes. First, some students still did not raise their hands and participate frequently enough. Second, other students started raising their hands and wanting to speak too often (almost every minute).

The teacher remembered that she could use schedules of differential reinforcement to increase or decrease the rate of a behavior. Describe a suggested procedure she could implement with each of her two categories of students (i.e., those who raised their hands too infrequently and those who raised their hands too frequently).

Question 1. Be sure to state the name of both schedules of differential reinforcement she should use and define them.

Question 2. Explain how she could set up each schedule of reinforcement in her classroom and how she would know if they worked.
