Experiential Learning Activity A: Letter of Recommendation
One of many responsibilities of a school counselor is writing letters of recommendation for high school juniors and seniors to aid them with meeting college admission requirements. When writing a letter of recommendation, it is important to accurately represent the student's abilities, including academic achievements, personal strengths, and involvement in the school and community.
For this assignment, interview a school counselor about his or her suggestions for writing a letter of recommendation for a student. After your interview, write a 250-500 word summary of the responses to each of the following questions:
What key content do you include for a strong letter of recommendation?
How do you gather information to include in a letter of recommendation?
What student activities, both on campus and off campus should you include? What do you highlight them?
What do you do when a student needs a letter of recommendation, but he or she is not a stellar student academically or behaviorally?
What are the legal and ethical considerations when writing a letter of recommendation for a student?
How often do you write letters of recommendation?
How do you make time for these extra duties as a school counselor?
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Legal Issues in Career Counseling
Career counseling began as vocational counseling in 1909. In the more than 100 years since its inception, there are a variety of legal decisions as well as codes of ethics that have been developed that influence career counseling activities.
Considering the legal and ethical implications related to career counseling in a diverse, multicultural school environment, in 500-750 words, address the following when working with students:
Describe the ethical or legal considerations specific to career counseling with PK-12 students.
Describe how school counselors should address ethical or legal considerations with compassion, justice, and concern for the common good.
Explain how school counselors can help mitigate bias based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disabilities, etc. in career counseling.
In the context of career counseling, describe how school counselors should balance their responsibilities to the student as well as to a future post-secondary institution, scholarship provider, and future employer.
Provide an example of a career development intervention a school counselor can use to facilitate career planning for children and adolescents. What are the legal and ethical considerations?
