Scenario: Mr Hal, a 56 year old male, has been admitted to the Intensive
Care Unit with non-STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction). You are working on the ward as an Enrolled Nurse and are caring for him during your night shifts. One night, while helping Mr Hal go to bed from the chair, Mr Hal suddenly becomes unconscious. You initiate the Medical Emergency Team call to get more assistance. Before the team arrives, a nurse colleague of yours named Kylie helps to position Mr Hal. You tell her you think you should put him back to bed, but Kylie suggests that you leave him on the floor and settle him until further help arrives. You do not understand the rationale for this suggestion and therefore argue with Kylie, stating "he will be better on the bed". Before the team arrives, Mr Hal regains consciousness. When the doctor assesses him, the doctor says "why did you initiate the MET call unnecessarily? They have been busy all night and had to rush here for this unnecessary MET call!" You have finished your handover to the team and go to the tea-room quite upset and distressed.
QUESTION: Explain how mediation and conflict resolution could be used to resolve the disagreement between yourself and Kylie.
