Question - The task enables you to demonstrate your achievement of the following Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the Australian system of health law and identify laws and regulations relevant to specific elements of health service delivery.
  • Explain core features of ethical theories and frameworks, and key ethical principles and concepts including autonomy, justice, beneficence, non-maleficence, and human dignity.
  • Critically analyse an ethical issue in health service delivery through identification of relevant empirical evidence, ethical concepts and principles, and Australian laws, and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of relevant ethical arguments.
  • Formulate solutions to ethical dilemmas in health service management and delivery that are justified by ethical arguments and informed by relevant Australian laws and ethical governance tools.

Instructions:

1. In Week 2, you must select an ethicolegal issue in health service delivery which you will investigate during weeks 3-11. You are encouraged to discuss your choice of topic with your tutor.

For example, you might start by deciding on the general topic of "late termination of pregnancy" or "public funding of pharmaceuticals for rare diseases" or "mandatory reporting of health professional misconduct" or "open disclosure of medical errors".

2. Explore the peer-reviewed literature relating to your chosen topic, then formulate a question you will strive to answer in your report. Developing a specific question may help you to focus your research and analysis.

For example, "Under what conditions should late termination of pregnancy be permitted?" "Should open disclosure policy always be followed?"

3. Develop a briefing report which will explain the issue, analyse different perspectives on it or options for addressing it, and develop recommendations for managing it.

Comments from the student: See I thought of DEAD DONOR RULE but if tutors think that there are better options than this they can take that instead. Please ask the tutor to confirm the topic that he finds good enough to score and let me know before he starts writing. I want to score the best no matter what topic.

In Week 6, (by Tuesday 12th) you should submit a draft outline or plan of your work (up to 1000 words) in order to receive formative feedback on this from your tutor. You can also discuss your work on the report during seminars and via the Discussion Board.
