Problem: Do you remember the first time (or an early time) of being separated from your parents? How did you feel and how did your parents respond? How did that influence your attachment style? John Bowlby wrote several papers on the ties between a children and their mothers. When asked about it in the video, Richard compared the fear we have as children when our mother leaves with the feeling of "frantic" and as though "demons are after us." Similarly, as adults, if a loved one dies, we feel hurt that our once "confined love" has been taken away. If our culture/environment as children was different, would our experiences transfer in the same way into adulthood? Is attachment a cultural concept we create? In regards to the attachment controversy, the interviewer mentioned that "many treat attachment as the theory of everything." Do you think that attachment theory is used to explain too much about people's personality and current adjustment? How have you seen the concept applied?
