Question: Estimate how much 1 M NaOH that is needed to adjust the pH of 200 ml of 0.2 M H3PO4 to pH 4.0 (point a), 6.82 (point b), and 9.0 (point c). The pKa1, pKa2 and pKa3 of H3PO4 are 2.15, 6.82, and 12.38, respectively. The titration curve of H3PO4 is shown in the figure below. At which pH H3PO4 serve as a good buffer for experiments in biochemistry and molecular biology? What are the dominant ions at this pH?
