Overview
For your written project in the Problem Solving portion of this course, you will be examining a tangible problem within your home organization that you have the ability to solve. Throughout each day of the module, you will examine your problem via a different step in the 8-step problem solving model used within the Air Force Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) program.
Ultimately, you will write a Staff Study paper (formatted via the Tongue and Quill, with exceptions in the Details below.) where you discuss your clarified problem, propose solutions, and project what a successful change would look like.
Problem Statement: Lack of A EPR Process?
The current EPR/OPR process is taking 6 months longer than required as per AFI36-2406 which suggests they be accomplished in 60 calendar days after the close out date. "
Details
Starting on day one of the Problem Solving Outcome, you will examine your organization and identify a problem that you can solve upon returning to home station. The problem must be something within your own area of responsibility - it cannot be something you expect peers or your supervisors to handle. If you cannot lead the problem solving efforts with your team, you must re-evaluate the problem you are trying to solve and choose one you can personally solve with your team back home and not what you have already done.
All lessons within this outcome will culminate in a Staff Study paper, in which you will address your problem solving methods under the following format:
• Heading
• Body consisting of the following headers:
o The Problem
o Factors Bearing on the Problem
o Discussion
o Conclusion
o Action Recommended
• Ending
• Attachments
Additionally, while you may submit attachments to the Staff Study, you must attach examples of the work you did using at least one tool from each of the following problem solving lessons:
• Clarify and Validate the Problem
• Break Down Problems and Identify Performance Gaps
• Setting Improvement Targets
• Determining Root Causes
Specifics
• See Chapter 17, The Staff Study, from the Tongue and Quill for specifics on what type of information belongs in each section.
• The paper must be between 3-5 pages. Any information over the fifth page will not be graded. Less than three full pages will be an automatic fail for the assignment.
• You may use attachments that support your position. Attachments do not count against your page count nor will they be graded. Your message must be delivered via the Staff Study paper.
o Attachments may be in any format as long as they clearly add to your messaging. They can be text, photos, PowerPoints, videos you've taken, survey results, AFIs, TOs, etc.
• References must be credible and relevant to support position
