Homework: Healthcare Databases & Decision-Making
Databases are used by the healthcare organizations to make tactical (operational) and strategic (planning) decision-making by providing data for generating the required information. A Decision Support System (DSS) analyzes the data in databases and filters and/or computes/processes data into information used for solving problems and making business-related decisions. In healthcare, databases help providers both in improving operational efficiency and clinical decision-making. A typical example of a database and a decision-making combination is the Electronic Health Record (EHR) that maintains a repository of healthcare data and the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) software used to help providers make appropriate clinical decisions.
Objectives:
After completing this module, you should be able to:
A. Examine the role of databases in healthcare decision-making.
B. Examine functions of Decision Support Systems (DSS).
C. Assess the role of healthcare databases in improving healthcare service delivery quality.
D. Evaluate EHR as the data source, database, and DSS system.
A Decision Support System (DSS) is an information system that guides the provider in the process of making clinical, financial, and operational decisions. A typical healthcare facility, like a hospital, may use several DSS to support its diverse operations. Evaluate the impact of various DSS in any healthcare facility (hospital, ambulatory, urgent care, nursing home) with clinical, operational, financial, supply chain and human resources functions. What could be possible risks of not using these decisions-making tools for the organization? Why? Cite an example of using DSS and assess its reliability in decision-making. Explain your reasoning.
Task
Using Internet resources, search three national and three international healthcare organizations that maintain databases and use the information based on the processed data from these databases in their decision-making process. Briefly describe the organizations and types of data contained in their databases (make sure to remember quality of data points and the processing functions of the tool). Analyze how that data is processed and converted into information to meet specific requirements. How the received information is used for decision-making. Are there shortcomings of such approach? Offer one-two for the review. How to overcome them?
