Aim of assessment

The aim of this assessment item is to provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate they understand the essential elements of an effective nurse-client relationship, the factors that influence this relationship and the evidence that supports its relevance to positive health outcomes for clients on mental health contexts. ? Critically analyse theories and research concerning the nurse-client relationship

Various authors speak of the ‘healing' potential of the nurse-client relationship and they characterise these relationships as engaged, reciprocal, committed and holistically focused on the client. (Barker, 2006; Moore, 2005; Stickley & Freshwater, 2002; Horsfall & Stuhlmiller, 2000).

Task: Critically examine the credibility and relevance of these claims in relation to nursing practice within your mental health service. Use examples from your practice and the extensive literature to explain and support your argument.
