Homework: Engineering
For this homework, you will explore two articles on your chosen topic. You will not argue your own position on the issue. Instead, you will compare the authors' perspectives, exploring the questions raised in each article and the authors' attempts to answer those questions.
To that end, you must consider definitions of key terms and concepts, areas of agreement and disagreement, and the ways in which the authors support their positions. Examine both sides objectively and organize your comparison around a well-defined thesis statement. Determining the issue's rhetorical context will prepare you for the second research paper (Arguing to Convince).
Your paper should contain the following (not necessarily in this order):
1. An introduction that briefly presents the issue, contains basic information about your sources, and puts forth a clear thesis statement.
2. A clear explanation of each article's main ideas and arguments through a combination of quotations, paraphrases, and summaries. Don't assume your reader is familiar with these texts
3. A detailed comparison of the arguments' similarities and differences, including definitions of key terms and concepts, areas of agreement and disagreement, and other information that sheds light on the issue. For example, you might discuss the authors, the evidence they provide, their rhetorical strategies, and anything else that is relevant to this homework's purpose. Don't use this as an excuse to pad the text. Only provide information that is necessary for understanding your topic's rhetorical context.
4. A conclusion that ties everything together without simply repeating points already discussed in your essay. For example, you might briefly comment on which Viewpoint is more reasonable and why.
