For one, genetic studies have revealed that human and chimpanzee DNA is incredibly similar, with a 98-99% match, underscoring our shared ancestry. The fossil record has also expanded, with discoveries like Australopithecus afarensis, famously known as "Lucy," which show transitional features between ape-like ancestors and modern humans. Additionally, comparative anatomy has highlighted similar structures between the two, such as dental patterns and thumb proportions. On the biochemical side, proteins and other molecular markers show significant likenesses. Even the behaviors of chimpanzees show complexity and social traits that resemble humans. If researchers back in Darwin's time had access to this kind of evidence, his ideas might have gained more popularity. The genetic and fossil evidence, in particular, would have provided strong, tangible proof that could persuade skeptics and lessen the debates rooted in the lack of anatomical data at the time. While societal and religious attitudes might still have posed challenges due to the implications of common ancestry with primates, the scientific community would likely have embraced Darwin's ideas more enthusiastically with such robust backing.
