Project Instructions: Motivational Interviewing Recording and Self-Assessment
Objective:
This final project will give you hands-on experience with Motivational Interviewing (MI) by recording a 20-minute MI session with a peer or a patient (no Protected Health Information (PHI) or HIPAA-protected details included). You will then evaluate your MI skills using the Behavior Change Counseling Index (BECCI) scoring tool. I will review your recording and self-assessment to provide feedback on your MI fidelity and areas for improvement.
Project Components:
Recording a Motivational Interviewing Session (20 minutes)
Instructions: Arrange a 20-minute MI session with a peer from class, friend, or patient. The session should focus on exploring ambivalence and fostering motivation for behavior change (e.g., smoking cessation, healthy eating, physical activity, sleep hygiene, stress management).
If you are using a patient please ensure they consent to being recorded for purposes of this course evaluation and that no personal health identifying information (PHI) is disclosed during the recording. Get expert-level assistance in any subject with our assignment help services.
Use MI techniques such as reflective listening, open-ended questions, affirmations, and reflections to evoke change talk and to guide the conversation.
The goal of this session is not necessarily to solve the issue but to demonstrate MI skills and techniques.
Voice memos (or similar app) on your phone is a great tool for recording, and you can email yourself the recording.

After recording the session, assess your performance using the Behavior Change Counseling Index (BECCI) scoring tool. This tool measures how well you use MI techniques during behavior change counseling.
Provide a reflective summary of what you believe went well and where you think you can improve, based on your BECCI scores.
Submission Instructions:
Upload your 20-minute audio or video recording of your MI session. You can use voice recording apps on your phone.

Instructor Feedback:
I will review your recording, your BECCI self-assessment, and your reflective summary. I will provide you feedback with specific suggestions to enhance your use of MI techniques.
Evaluation Criteria:
Your final project will be graded on the following:
MI Technique Application: Demonstration of MI techniques such as reflective listening, open-ended questions, summarizing, and evoking change talk.
BECCI Self-Assessment: Accuracy and insightfulness of your self-assessment using the BECCI tool, with a thoughtful reflection on strengths and areas for growth.
Reflective Summary: Depth of self-reflection and ability to critically analyze your MI session.
