Knowledge Audits for Business Analysis
Assessment - Case Study Report
Read the given case study carefully, explore the context of the business and understand the perspectives of the stakeholders. Analyse the problems or needs of the business, come up with prospective business solution options in terms of ICT systems, business processes and organisation, knowledge resources, assess costs and benefits of the solution options, and work out a plan to realise the benefits of the business solution. See yourself as a future business and knowledge analyst and visualise yourself as applying the knowledge and skills developed in the unit to deliver the business solution as if you would have been part of a Business Analysis and Knowledge Audit team working on this contemporary project. Think outside of the box; use your imagination, your innovative vision, critical thinking, problem solving and team working skills, and apply logical and appropriate assumptions when you solve the business process and operations as well as knowledge resource and knowledge management system related issues in the given Case study.
In the given Case study report, you will need to evaluate the current business situation and the knowledge audit context as per the given topics, analyse the perspective of the stakeholders, identify the deficiencies in the current ICT systems, business processes and organisation, knowledge resources, knowledge audit, knowledge typology and implementation, propose possible improvements with cost and benefit analysis, and develop a plan to deliver the business solution and propose possible improvements from a business analysis and knowledge auditing point of view.
You are required to demonstrate your analytical, technical and knowledge auditing skills to communicate your findings for the given scenario. The case study report should be structured as follows:
A title page
Executive summary
Table of contents
Introduction
Discussion - Topical headings (as required from analysis results of items listed in the next page below)
Conclusion
References
Discussion - Topical headings: Your analysis should focus on the following topics that you have to include in your report (place them after Introduction but before Conclusion section of your report):
Business context
Use PESTLE and SWOT analysis to analyse the external and internal environments of the business.
Analysis of stakeholders' perspectives
Perform a CATWOE analysis or develop business activity models (BAM) to illustrate the stakeholders' perspective.
Business Gap analysis
You will identify the problems or gaps in people, processes, organisation, and information & technology and come up with prospective solution options. You should organise your gap analysis using the POPIT model.
Knowledge Gap analysis
List and describe the knowledge gaps obvious in the given Case study.
Categorise each knowledge gap according to the typologies of personal knowledge (e.g., individual tacit, collective tacit, etc.).
Propose a method to bridge each identified gap.
Knowledge Audit typology
What typology of knowledge audit types you will apply in the given Case study organisation?
Develop a knowledge typology by identifying different knowledge resources (tangible and intangible ) and forms (such as explicit, implicit, tacit, public, operational, etc); and explore ways to utilise them strategically for long-term organisational growth.
Draw a knowledge audit map to illustrate them visually.
Knowledge Implementation
Use the SECI Model to develop a detailed plan for the given Case study in order to facilitate the conversion of tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge among the professional and technical staff members (including new ones).
List potential challenges the given Case study might face in this knowledge conversion process and recommend solutions to overcome them.
Imagine three different scenarios for the future of the Case study organisation (by taking into account its potential growth) in the next 1, 3, 5 year periods, and present your overall KA and KM recommendations for this organisation with a focus on "Audit Models," and "Instruments and methods" (Hint: you may use Table 21.1 (pp. 349-352 of your textbook, Principals of Knowledge Auditing) to gain some additional information for this question).
Cost and benefit analysis
Identify the tangible and intangible costs and benefits of your prospective solution options. Also perform an impact assessment to evaluate what impact the prospective solution options might have on the organisation.
Realisation of benefits
Choose one prospective solution option and develop a Benefits Dependency Network to illustrate how the expected benefits of the solution would be achieved.
Your team members should take different roles in the team, including business/knowledge analyst, report writer, and proof-reader. You may rotate the leadership role. When you change the leadership role, the next business/knowledge analyst will assume the role of new leader heading the team in the common direction. You should divide the task of writing the analysis part of the case study report among the group members. All team members should work closely to produce the introduction and conclusion sections. The finalised version of the Case study report should be read and reviewed by all team members.
The Case study report should be approximately 3,000 words (excluding title page, and References list). You may have up to 10% extra text with no penalty. The References section should include at least eight (8) references (including at least five academic references). The title page of the Case study report should include student IDs and full names of all team members. Include a table showing the leadership roles, team member roles, and duration on the last page of your report.
In the Case study report, you will be assessed based on your ability to apply business analysis techniques and knowledge auditing models, instruments and methods to explore the current business situation and the knowledge audit context as per the given topics, and propose possible improvements from a business analysis and knowledge auditing point of view to provide business solutions for the given Cases study, and work as a group/team member. As a group/team, you are required to demonstrate your analytical, technical and knowledge auditing skills to communicate your findings from the given Case study scenario.
