Instructions to Students Assessment: Case Study

Select one of the case studies provided and analyse and evaluate the information to evaluate the child's social and emotional development in relation to their interactions and relationships with others and to identify potential next steps. Reflect on and explain, with reference to relevant unit literature, the role of the adult in responding to the child in ways that support the child's wellbeing and security.

Guidelines:

1. Choose one case study from the three provided below.

Case Study A: Emma's Classroom Dynamics

Emma is a 5-year-old kindergartner who appears naturally shy and reserved. Teachers note that while Emma shows interest in participating during one-on-one interactions, she tends to withdraw in larger group settings. She often avoids eye contact, and her responses during group activities are minimal. Observations suggest that Emma may feel overwhelmed in social settings, and her reserved behaviour might be linked to underlying anxiety or low self-confidence. Case Study B: Mia, A 4-Year-Old in a Preschool Setting

Mia is a 4-year-old child attending a preschool setting five days a week. She is an only child and lives with her parents, who both work full-time. Mia has been in the preschool for six months. Initially, she was shy and hesitant to engage with her peers, preferring to stay close to her teacher. Over time, she has started interacting with a small group of children but still struggles with emotional regulation, particularly when faced with conflict or frustration.

Case Study C: Jake, A 3-Year-Old in a Nursery Setting

Jake is a 3-year-old boy attending a nursery three days a week. He has recently transitioned from being cared for at home by his grandmother to attending nursery. Jake is an only child, and his parents work full-time. His speech development is slightly delayed compared to his peers, and he often uses gestures or single words to communicate his needs.
Jake enjoys playing with toys independently but struggles with group play. He becomes easily frustrated when he cannot communicate effectively and sometimes resorts to pushing or grabbing when interacting with others. The nursery staff have noticed that Jake prefers parallel play and often watches other children rather than joining in. He is particularly attached to one caregiver and becomes distressed when she is unavailable.
