RESEARCH POSTER
Learning outcome 1: Understand qualitative research by reading ethnographies
Learning outcome 2: Critically discuss the theoretical, political and ethical issues associated with social scientific research
Learning outcome 3: Identify appropriate research strategies for recording, analysis and managing data.
Scenario:
You are an active researcher and you have a great idea about conducting a small research project associated with your discipline. You require support from an organisation to conduct the project so you have to "sell" your idea to obtain this support.
In order to capture the attention of your organisation you decide to produce a poster. This assessment item asks you to produce a one -page high quality poster which outlines the key aspects of a qualitative research project that you plan to conduct. This gives you the opportunity to construct a poster on a topic which is of interest to you within your academic discipline. The poster should contain information relating to: the title of the project, some background information on the topic, aims of the study, data collection methods, how you would analyse the data, and 2-3 ethical issues relating to your project.
You should also consider the following points when designing thisposter:
• The poster should convey effectively a clear concise overview about the proposed research
• Font size and type must be legible while the poster should be aesthetically appealing.
• The title should be clear and unambiguous
• Colour selections should be simple, complementary, and a pleasure to the eye. Use colours wisely. Too many colours will obscure themessage
• Uncomplicated layout and organization of the material will ensure the main message of the posteris clear
• Text should be balanced with graphics, so that neither overwhelms theother
• Avoid abbreviations, acronyms, andjargon.
• Check correct spelling - notypos
• Eye movement should be natural so that the visual grammar of the poster easily leads the viewer through themessage
• Less rather than more text isdesirable
• Use simplicity. Don't overload the poster; more material could mean the viewer will readless.
b. In addition you are to include a 200 word abstract (maximum) which should accompany the poster when it issubmitted.
Key areas to be addressed for the abstract are:
• Why you chose this topic and why it is important and should be conducted (use 2-3 references) to support your argument.
• List the potential outcomes of the project and how it might assist people in the community.
• What you consider to be the key design features of theposter
• Who or what sections of the community might this poster would appealto
• A theory which best provides an explanation about thetopic.
• The abstract should be accompanied by a reference list containing 3-4 academic references which are cited within the abstract itself.
• Note: poster and abstract are to be uploaded onto the JCU site together in order to be assessed.
