4. You document must be visually well presented. Please format your document to maximise readability by making appropriate use of the following: a. White space b. Emphasis c. Font size and style ( font size 12, Arial style recommended) 4.1. Also take care to follow accepted formatting conventions by paying attention to the following: a. margin size b. page and line breaks c. space between paragraphs d. heading and/or sub-heading styles (if applicable)

Other points you should take note: 1. Your essay must be structured in a logical and coherent manner (paragraphs must flow on from each other). 2. You must use correct and complete citations in both the body of your essay and in the reference list. Please review the Harvard Referencing Guide before you submit your assignment to avoid loss of marks. 3. Ensure that you have written in an objective and unbiased manner. It is essential that you avoid: a.Absolute or unsubstantiated statements (saying something without providing evidence) b.Fact - opinion confusion (make sure something is factual and not just your opinion or one of your source’s opinion). c.Fact – interference confusion (make sure that you can distinguish between inference and facts). 3.1. When making assumptions, inferences or opinions, clearly state them as such and ensure that you have explained the reasoning behind them.

When reading the rubric (see the unit outline and LEO), please note the following: 1. Content of your essay must be satisfactory, and 2. The communicative aspect of your writing must be credible. Please note that achieving a satisfactory level of written communication (number 2 above) is not merely a matter of avoiding writing errors and ensuring your essay is well structured. While these are very important to the mark you will receive, this assessment also involves such things as avoiding generalisations and fact/inference/opinion confusions, and providing evidence using correct referencing (both in-text and in your reference list) for claims made.

8. Details of how marks are awarded are provided in the rubric contained in the unit outline and LEO. Essay Structure and Word Count Guide The word count is 1500 words (plus/minus 10%. Below is a suggested word count guide (this is indicative only). - Essay title and abstract (not included in the word count) - Introduction (125 words approx.) - Paragraph 1 (250 words approx.) - Paragraph 2 (250 words approx.) - Paragraph 3 (250 words approx.) - Paragraph 4 (250 words approx.) - Paragraph 5 (250 words approx.) - Conclusion (125 words approx.) - List of References (not included in the word count) Refer to Eunson 2016, p 260 for guidance to the essay structure. Note that if you opt to use headings/sub-headings in your essay, they are not included in the word count.

• An academic source is a published article in a referred journal or conference paper. • Text books that use citations and have been through a quality process are also appropriate form of academic source (no self-publications). • Newspapers and magazines should be kept to a minimum and will not be counted as an academic source. 5. Any new terminology needs to be defined. All definitions need citations. NOTE: Dictionary.com and Wikipedia are NOT appropriate citations. 6. You must draw a final conclusion based on your arguments and position whether you agree or disagree with the thesis statement. 7. Use Harvard referencing style throughout the essay. Do not use footnotes, endnotes or lengthy quotations more than 40 words.
