Friction Loss Experiments

Part 1. Losses in straight smooth pipes

For a particular flow rate, estimate the flow velocity and Reynolds number and use them to calculate the friction factor f as derived from the Blasius formula.

Part 2. Losses in Bends.

The head loss due to the flow around a circular bend can be evaluated by calculating the head loss across an equivalent straight pipe (using either the Blasius formula or the Moody chart) and measuring the head loss along the pipe with the circular bend.

For a particular flow rate, estimate the flow velocity and Reynolds number.

1. Using the friction factor f from the Moody chart, calculate head loss between tappings 15 and 16. Now measure the piezometer readings at tappings 15 and 16 and use the difference to estimate kB.
2. Repeat the process above but this time estimate f from the Blasius formula as opposed to the Moody chart.
3. Compare the calculated values of kB with that from Fig. 2 when R/D = 50/13.6.

Part 3. Venturi and Orifice Meters

Both Venturi tube and Orifice meters can be used to determine volumetric flow rates. In this part we want to compare the measured flow rate with those obtained from the Venturi and Orifice meters.

Then use the provided Pipe Losses Experiment-data to generate your individual report for lab 2.
Your Lab Report Must be in the format of the AFMC paper, (provided on FLO).
• If you do not use the template, you will receive 0% for your report.
• If you exceed the 4 page limit, you will receive 0% for your report.
Note: you will not submit your paper to this conference. You can upload your report on FLO on WEEK13.

The following sections need to be included in your paper:
1.Title and Abstract
2. Introduction
3. Experimental techniques
4. Results

5. Discussion
6. Conclusion
