CASE STUDY: Essential Intrapartum Newborn Care

An infant is delivered by a spontaneous vertex delivery at term. Three minutes after birth the cord is clamped and cut and the infant is dried. The infant cries well and appears normal. The infant has a lot of vernix and a blue mark is noticed over the lower back. The infant passes urine after delivery but does not pass urine again for 24 hours.

Questions:

1. Is it normal that the infant passed urine after delivery but did not void again within 24 hours? why or why not? explain.

2. According to the situation, when should the infant be given to the mother?

3. Should the vernix be washed off immediately after delivery? why or why not? explain.
