ENG760S1 CADCAM Systems - University of Portsmouth
Aims:
1. To develop comprehensive knowledge in application of concurrent engineering concepts using integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software tools in modern design and manufacture.
2. To develop confidence and capability in the effective use of industrial standard CAD/CAM/CAE systems.
Part 1:
Learning outcome 1. Critically evaluate current CAD/CAM/CAE technologies and their application to enhance engineering design and manufacture.
Learning outcome 2. Apply and critically evaluate the modern CAD techniques, practices and limitations of 3D solid modelling for efficient engineering design.
Learning outcome 3. Apply numerical analysis and simulation tools within a CAD system, in order to predict product behaviour and optimise performance, and critically evaluate their limitations.
Tasks to be carried out:
Task 1. Select your variant from Table 1 using a Piston cylinder diameter (see Figure 1) corresponding to the 5th digit of your student ID number. Create a parametric 3D solid model of the Engine Block shown in Figure 1 for a 6-cylinder internal combustion engine. Your design should be in a good proportion to the one shown in the picture. Assign appropriete material and calculate the volume (in cm3) and mass (kg) of the final Engine Block model.
Task 2. Develop a set of relations between feature parameters that will set the Piston cylinder height to be 1.3 times the Piston cylinder diameter enabling successful parametric modifications. Create a family table with 3 instances. Describe the relations and modification process in the report.
Task 3. Apply numerical strength analysis (Creo Structure) to the Engine Block model simulating the combustion (maximum pressure - 50 bar). Minimise the Engine Block mass while keeping the critical strength within material strength limits. Make three iterations. (20 marks)
Task 4. Report - present all your work with relevant comments, screen captures, and discuss the main 3D CAD CAM principles. (max 2000+-500 words).

Part 2:
Learning outcome 1. Critically evaluate current CAD/CAM/CAE technologies and their application to enhance engineering design and manufacture.
Learning outcome 2. Employ and critically evaluate a range of CAM approaches and CNC simulations in order to plan manufacturing processes, optimise manufacturing time/ cost, and produce NC data for efficient production.
Task 1. Import the provided 3d part model to Creo and use it as reference part for the CAM model. Create a square block as workpiece having sufficient allowance to machine the top part of the model (no need to machine the bottom and the sidewalls of the square base).
Task 2. Create a process plan and set up a manufacturing process using a 3-axis CNC milling machine to machine the part in mild steel. Select appropriate machining sequences including finishing of the top surface and the 4 corner holes. Configure the relevant cutting tools for them. Create and observe the tool path cutting simulation of each sequence.
Task 3. Select/calculate appropriate cutting parameters and use the CADCAM system to estimate the machining time for each sequence and operation.
Task 4. Report - present all your work with relevant comments, screen captures, and discuss the main 3D CAD CAM principles. (max 2000+-500 words).
