Assessment Instructions
Using the case study that will be available to all students from the beginning of Week 7, accessible via the ‘Assigned Case Study' button in the BUS101 subject assessments tab on MyKBS, students are to imagine they have recently completed a significant task or project assigned by their manager. Recognising the value of continuous improvement, they are encouraged to request feedback to strengthen their performance in future projects. The manager in the case study is known for encouraging open communication, and students should feel confident reaching out professionally to seek constructive feedback.
This assessment is divided into three parts, each designed to support the development of your written communication skills in a professional context.
In the first part, you are required to write a professional email to the manager described in the case study. Your email should clearly state its purpose, provide a brief overview of the completed project, and express appreciation for the opportunity to contribute. You should also request specific feedback on various aspects of your performance and communicate your openness to discussing the feedback further or implementing any suggested improvements. This task allows you to demonstrate your ability to communicate professionally and clearly in a workplace setting.
In the second part, you will use the free version of ChatGPT to generate an alternative version of the same email. You must include the prompt you used and the full response generated by ChatGPT. Please note that the free version of ChatGPT does not retain conversation history, so it is essential to take a screenshot of your generated content. If you are using a paid version, this is not necessary.
This task encourages you to reflect on the role digital tools can play in professional communication and provides a meaningful comparison with your own written work.
In the final part of your submission, you are required to write a 400-word comparison of the two emails-your own and the one created by ChatGPT. You should analyse the strengths and weaknesses of each version, consider which communicates more effectively and why, and reflect on what you have learned about writing professional emails and seeking feedback. You should also discuss the broader importance of input in personal and professional development.
Overall, this assessment provides an opportunity to practise real-world communication, improve your confidence in workplace interactions, and develop effective strategies to overcome common communication challenges.
