Question
Use the elements of social cognitive career theory to brainstorm careers that may be well suited for you.
- What are your interests? What do you like?
- What do you want to achieve in your life? What are your major goals in life? (This question is asking about your choice goals.)
- What do you think you are good at? Identify the skills that suit you best. (This question is asking about your self-efficacy.)
- Based on the three questions above, brainstorm five careers that might fit your interests, goals, and skills well.
- For each of the careers you thought of, what do you think it would be like if you were in that job? For instance, would you be happy, stressed, effective, fulfilled? (This question is asking about your outcome expectations.)
- Based on your outcome expectations, choose one career that seems most intriguing and fitting for you.
- For the career that you find most appealing, what supports are available to help you as you pursue that career path?
- For this same career, what barriers might stand in your way of pursuing this career?
- How might you work past these barriers and/or prevent them from forming?
